‘Homesick’ Benolt Aubard (2018)

On a visit to Manchester art gallery I came across Benolt Aubard work ‘Homesick’, his work really stood out to me because where and how it was placed. Aubard’s chosen piece, Homesick, is of a single powerful word sprayed directly onto a bedsheet, the bed sheet of which was found on the streets of Paris. His work was hung on to the wall from either side and was surrounded by oil paintings. It being the only artwork within the room that was not an oil painting made his work catch my eye and intrigued me as to what the meaning behind it was.

Upon doing so research I found out that Aubards artwork ‘homeless’ was chosen for public display at Manchester Art Gallery by The Manchester Contemporary Art Fund. His work was Selected from hundreds of exhibiting artists, following a rigorous selection process.

“Aubard has used a bedsheet, referencing the domestic, and added graffiti-like text, reminiscent of a protest banner.” His idea was that always preoccupying your thoughts of home and having an attachment to objects could lead to symptoms of depression and anxiety. He was exploring the issues surrounding identity and belonging. “The text is not a question, asking whether we feel homesick, but rather a statement of fact.”

Homesick doesn’t necessarily refer to home as a building. It stems from an instinctive need for love, protection and security which are intrinsic to the human condition. These feelings and qualities are usually associated with home and are common to all of us.

Benolt Aubard  is recognized for combining objects with words and a use of poetry to create works that comment on the ongoing challenges faced by modern society. He often uses slogans on ready-made objects to explore the theme of home and refuge at a time when there is significant migration in the world. His artwork pieces are made to provoke conversation by harnessing topical issues and celebrating historical and iconic object forms.
